5 Ways Yoga Instructors Can Supplement Their Income

Yoga instructors who have been teaching longer than a few months know that yoga studio classes alone hardly pay enough to make ends meet. For full-time yoga teachers, running around from class to class is not only unlucrative, it's exhausting and that schedule can quickly lead to instructor burnout.

As a yoga instructor, the amount of money you'll make largely depends on where you live and the studio’s yoga certification requirements. Boutique yoga studios and gyms generally pay less to yoga teachers that just completed their yoga teacher training, while established yoga studios may compensate a little better. Yogis with more teaching experience or additional skills and yoga certifications can expect to be paid more per yoga class. According to an article on Do You Yoga, one yoga instructor says that new yoga teachers in her neighborhood make around $35 per class at a boutique yoga studio, whereas those with additional training make $50-75.

At those rates, you could lead several yoga classes per day and still be left with little after rent and bills are paid. Fortunately, you don't have to give up teaching to make a living with yoga. You simply need to get a little more creative and explore additional opportunities to help diversify your income.

Some part-time yoga instructors only teach on the side as a means to supplement earnings from their full-time job. Others rely on teaching yoga classes for their full income. If you're in the latter group, read on for a few ways to help supplement your income while still doing what you love - teaching yoga:

Launch a smart TV channel: Teaching yoga classes online can help you grow your yogi audience and generate passive income. Smart TV platforms like Binge Networks, an online content distribution and monetization platform, gives yoga instructors an opportunity to stream their classes through premium outlets including Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Prime. The space is ripe for opportunity: smart TV is a hot market, and more than 46 million homes already have one.

Hosting online yoga classes puts you in a great position to continue expanding your audience of yogis. Over time, as you share new yoga sequences and tips, you can grow a following and popularize your channel. This can also open doors to other opportunities that will help you expand your reach and build more supplemental income.

Book private yoga classes: Yoga instructors who enjoy working one-on-one with clients can see a sizeable income boost by offering private yoga sessions. Because these types of sessions involve more of your time and effort, you can (and should) charge more to private yoga clients. The Yoga Nomads suggests charging between $60-200 per hour, which may vary depending on your location, experience, and additional yoga certifications and skills. Still, they don't recommend pricing private sessions at less than $80 per hour. Another tip: you can build a long-term clientele by selling packages of private yoga classes, in groups of five or ten.

Help out at the yoga studio: If you're teaching multiple yoga classes at the same yoga studio or gym, it's worth asking if they could use any administrative or marketing help. Think about your skills and how you could apply them; there's likely plenty of work to be done. You could launch and run a yoga blog, create yoga-centric email newsletters, manage social media accounts with pictures showcasing your yoga class, and even update their website. Decide an hourly rate, work between yoga classes, and send an invoice when you're done.

Teach corporate classes: Many of today's businesses, eager to provide more wellness benefits and diversify employee perks, have begun offering yoga classes during the day. The meditation, stretching and breathing exercises make for an excellent break during the workday.

Yoga teachers can charge a flat rate per class, so they're paid regardless of the number of people who show up, and most corporations likely pay more than a yoga or fitness studio. If you're interested, reach out to the human resources departments for local businesses to learn of teaching opportunities.

Create an online yoga course: If you've been a yogi for a while and have a niche in the space, consider creating an online yoga course. This would provide students with a deep dive into a specific area of yoga, such as Hatha or Kundalini, or an introduction to yoga for beginners. Some examples might include "Yoga for Athletes," “Yoga Classes for Seniors,” "How to Launch A Yoga Business," "Yoga Poses For Beginners," or other related topics. Your online course can generate income long after you publish it online.
